Goal-setting and checking in

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, French writer and pioneering aviator

Thanks to the people of France, we have the beautiful and stately Statue of Liberty that stands 305 ft. tall as a symbol of our independence and the America Dream. Many people will celebrate this July 4th by enjoying –in person, on television or online – the spectacular fireworks show over Lady Liberty in New York Harbor.

As we have been reflecting on the first six months of the year and looking forward at the next two quarters, a couple of other French gifts come to mind. The above quote as well as his well known child’s fable for adults, The Little Prince (1943), was written by an impoverished French aristocrat who reminds us that “giving our all” (instead of just intending to do so) and “giving to other’s are two of life’s most meaningful rewards.

If you made any personal or professional New Year’s resolutions and goals in January, now is a great time to review your progress. Summer is also often the time when large organizations are exploring and deciding on their goals and budgets for the next year. What is your action plan for making sure the goals you set are realistic and not just wishes or dreams?

There are many methods for setting and achieving goals. One is using the word SMART to remember key elements of goal setting. Ask yourself if your goal is:

  • S – Specific (or Significant)
  • M – Measurable (or Meaningful)
  • A – Attainable/Achievable (or Action-Oriented)
  • R – Relevant (or Rewarding or Realistic)
  • T – Time-bound (or Traceable)

Whatever method you use, remember there is great power in writing your goals down, sharing them with others trusted individuals and reviewing them periodically throughout the time period you have set to reach your goals.

It is also extremely important to remember that very few things in life are achieved alone or in isolation. Think about those around you who can help. Who can you delegate distracting tasks to as you maintain your focus on your action plan?
